Firm also confirms a fresh $4 million VC round. Not a bad week.

Midomi is like Shazam, but you sing into the phone to identify the song rather than holding the handset up to a recording. It identifies songs in about five seconds.

The firm claims the app has scored several million downloads since launching at $4.99 three months ago.

[読んだ] iPod touch, iPhone 3G explode; Apple demand confidentiality before refund - SlashGear

Cue the usual “Apple’s gadgets are hot property” puns and “so cool they’re burning up” jokes; two Apple devices have reportedly combusted or exploded, with the company allegedly requiring one owner to sign a gagging-agreement before paying out compensation.  In Liverpool, UK, a teenage girl’s iPod touch exploded, having first hissed violently and increased in temperature, while in Leiden, Netherlands, an iPhone 3G caught fire and burnt through a car seat.

The iPod touch first “made a hissing noise” says Ken Stanborough, the father of the PMP’s teenage owner, before “getting hotter in my hand, and I thought I could see vapour”.  After throwing the iPod out of his back door, “within 30 seconds there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air.”  The Dutch iPhone 3G was more contained, being locked inside a car at the time of its combustion; its owner returned to find the car filled with thick black smoke and with considerable damage to the seat the smartphone had been left on.

Apple makes finding iPhone apps easier | iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews

Ever had trouble finding a particular app at the iPhone App Store? Who hasn't? A couple weeks ago I spent like 10 minutes trying to find a game a friend had just shown me. That may have had more to do with me being intoxicated and less about the App Store's search functionality, though.

Still, things may be improving. According to AppleInsider, Apple is now asking iPhone developers to enter 255 comma-separated characters as keywords to iTunes Connect to be used for search in the App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The $200 device has a 3.5-inch touchscreen, HD video capability, two (!) cameras, WiFi, GPS, 3D graphics acceleration and up to 64GB of storage (depending on how you use the SD card slot). Also intriguing is the inclusion of an accelerometer, promising either crash protection or Wii-style games.

Apple Backs Down, Allows Promo Codes For 17+ Apps Again : App Advice

promocodeforyou

Ten days ago we told you that Apple had stopped allowing promo codes for apps that were rated 17+. There was a moderate uproar of this decision because there are so many 17+ apps in the App Store and Apple’s rating system is still a bit questionable (one Twitter client may be rated 17+ while another may not be). That apparently is no longer the case as it appears that Apple has relented and is once again allowing for developers to distribute promo codes for apps rated 17+ again, according to this post over on TUAW. Apparently, a number of developers contacted them to report the change.

This is definitely good news. Let’s hope that Apple doesn’t change their mind again.

Wound magazine goes iPhone; Arts lovers rejoice!

iWound app

Wound magazine is yet another media to “go iPhone.” The publication that “celebrates edginess and originality through works that inspire in art, fashion, architecture and design” has a dedicated application in the AppStore called iWound, developed to complement the print and online versions of the magazine.

A short note from their own description of the application:

With over 400 pages of magazine content, iWound exists to bring creative culture close-up to a global mobile audience.

That should be enough for all Wound fans. AppStore link is here, and the app costs $4.99.

AppleInsider | iPhone, iPod touch "cannibalizing" traditional iPod market

Sales of traditional MP3 players like the iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod classic continue to decline, as the enemies of these Apple products -- the iPhone and iPod touch -- come from within the same company.
