Sony’s PSPgo is a new portable version of its five-year-old PlayStation Portable handheld gaming platform. The device launches in US and Europe in October, and it’s set to go head to head with Apple’s iPod touch. But Sony has revealed that its software strategy for the PSPgo lacks some critical features that Apple already makes available for iPod touch games.

According to a report on game site Gamasutra, Sony has confirmed that Sony’s “Mini” games for the PSPgo will not have wireless multiplayer functionality, downloadable content or software updates — all features available to iPod touch and iPhone gamers in iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

More Evidence That Snow Leopard Is a Touchscreen Operating System | Cult of Mac

The more I play with Snow Leopard, the more it looks like it’s designed to run Apple’s upcoming tablet.

Look at Expose in the Dock — the new feature that reveals all an application’s open windows when you click and hold the application’s icon. It’s tailor-made for fingers. Even more convincing is Stacks in the Dock. Hit a folder icon in the dock, and up pops the folder and all its files. Each icon is a big target for your finger, and the window has a big, fat slider for scrolling up and down (no more fiddly little arrows at the top or bottom). Both of these UI tweaks scream ‘touchscreen.’

And then today I discovered an unheralded feature that the minute I saw it, I thought, “Game over! Here’s rock-solid proof that Snow Leopard is designed for touchscreens. This is a tablet operating system.”

The new UI element s a virtual keyboard, a must-have for a tablet. Snow Leopard includes a big virtual keyboard that looks clearly designed for typing on a touchscreen. It’s a big, bold version of the iPhone’s virtual keyboard with large keys that scream “type me!”

Gangstar, a downloadable game for the iPhone, bears distinct similarities to Grand Theft Auto.
As the game offerings for the iPhone grow in numbers and sophistication, the touch-screen gadget has emerged as a competitor to hand-held gaming devices such as the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. The result: Major game companies are rethinking how they handle the market.

The iPhone App Market Size Debate: Is It $2.4B a Year or $250M? AdMob Responds

AdMob, a San Mateo, Calif.-based mobile advertising company, yesterday released a report that indicated Apple’s iPhone App Store generates about $200 million a month, or a run rate of some $2.4 billion a year.

[読んだ] iPod Touch Users Download 80% More Apps Than iPhone Owners (AAPL, GOOG)

Apple's (AAPL) iPod touch owners download significantly more apps per month than iPhone owners and Google (GOOG) Android phone owners, according to survey results released this morning by AdMob, a mobile ad network.

This could seem unexpected, as you might think that iPod touch buyers would download fewer apps than iPhone owners -- and would be more likely to use the device as an iPod, and not an app gadget. (One reason: The iPod touch has more limited access to the Internet, which limits when you can download apps and use some of them.)

But perhaps the abundance of free (and cheap) games, popular with iPod touch owners -- especially younger ones -- makes up the difference. That 22% of iPod touch owners say they download "more than 20" free apps a month is particularly telling. (And as commenters mention, many iPhone owners probably use the iPhone as a phone more than they do with the iPod touch, which makes perfect sense.)

40 staffers. 2 reviews. 8,500 iPhone apps per week - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Brainstorm Tech

The meat of the document, however, comes later, in answer to the FCC's question "what is the approval process?" Apple's reply tells us more about how the machinery works than we've learned in a year of hits, misses and developer hissy fits.

The procedure, as the company describes it:

  • Apple looks at every app it receives — 200,000 so far — pouring in at the rate of 8,500 new apps and updates per week.
  • The company employs 40 full-time reviewers; at least two reviewers study each app.
  • Apple has established — it doesn't say when — an App Store executive review board that sets policy and reviews app that have escalated to the board because they raise new or complex issues.
  • Apps are reviewed for just what you'd expect: bugs, instabilities, privacy violations, stuff that little kids shouldn't see.
  • Apps are also reviewed for the stuff that gets to the heart of the matter: use of unauthorized protocols and "applications that degrade the core experience of the iPhone." This presumably covers Apple's contractual obligation not to overtax AT&T's (T) fragile 3G network with TV or VOIP.

Apple says its reviewers spend most of their time making sure the apps function properly and working with developers to fix bugs and quality issues.

The iPod touch, the iTablet, and the Future of Mobile Gaming
The e-reader market isn't very large right now, and a device that offers ebook capability along with browsing, gaming, and video playback functionality has a good chance to tear a lot of market share out of the Kindle's hide. That's why I tend to think it's likely that the Apple iTablet going to hit stores in the near future. Apple is throwing a lot of money into areas of development that a tablet PC would excel in. Any tablet PC is going to be a substantial risk for the company that releases it, but I think technology has finally advanced enough to make them a viable computing option.
